Prep on the Cheap

To the beginning prepper with limited resources, the task of gathering supplies and stockpiling food seems daunting, and nearly impossible when it is difficult enough to have the money to pay bills and still have enough food to last until next payday. Having 3 days, let alone 3 weeks or months’ worth of food and supplies set aside seems like a pipe dream. However, with a bit of common sense, and careful budgeting, it is possible to plan for tomorrow’s meals as well as when the s**t hits the fan.

1. Incremental Prepping

Don’t feel as if you have to buy 5 year’s worth of food at one time. Concentrate on the staples first, such as rice, dried beans, oats, a gallon of water or two, etc. which have a very long shelf life, and can be bought fairly cheaply. Plan for the larger budget items one at a time, such as a hand crank radio, or a weapon. Even $5 a payday, though it seems small, can be saved for the larger items, which later on can at the very least defray the cost when you have more money at hand (such as when you receive your tax return).

2. Store what you eat – Sort of

In an earlier post, I talked about the importance of adapting your lifestyle now to be fit to survive later, and that storing things like Twinkies will only keep you fat and unhealthy for a longer period of time than the other survivors. HOWEVER, there is no point in stocking up on 5 years of hominy and anchovies if those are things you will not eat now. Adaptation is the key to survival, but so is common sense. It may be, and probably will be, necessary to eat a lot of beans and rice in a survival situation. In the meantime, why not come up with some favorite recipes which can incorporate them now?

3. One for now, one for later

When you are purchasing canned or dry goods or other items that will keep for long periods of time, or indefinitely, buy one more, just one, to set aside. It’s not necessary to buy a whole cartful, just one at a time will slowly but surely build your stockpile without breaking the bank.

4. Seize the deals

While buying in bulk seems to be the complete opposite of what I have been just saying, there are times when you have to take advantage of a really good deal. For instance, my wife and I were at the store last week and she happened to notice that fresh peaches were on sale for .25 a pound. We knew we would not see a deal like that again for a while, or possibly ever. So, even though money is EXTREMELY tight, we bought $5.00 worth. Since we are just getting started prepping, we do not currently have the means to can the peaches, so we did the next best thing in our situation, and we cut up and froze them. While they may not make it to the apocalypse, it will provide us with fresh fruit for some time to come. And for many of us, a SHTF situation does not necessarily involve the collapse of society. It may be the loss of a job, or an injury, or the car breaking down which pushes us and our families to the brink. And in times like those, bulk peaches can help a lot.

5. Don’t fall for the Dollar trap

It’s easy, we’ve all done it. “But it’s only a buck! What a deal!” Marketers count on us to have that reaction. They have engineered ever-decreasing sized bottles of soda, packets of pre-seasoned rice mixes, and other items boldly emblazoned with the one-dollar sticker just to have us waste our precious hard-earned money on scraps strategically placed at eye level or near the checkstands for our temptation. As preppers we think – “Wow – at a buck, I could get a bunch of these for storage! I could get 20 of them and fill a food-grade bucket!”

Stop right there, put down the rice-a-roni, and step away from the shopping cart. Now look carefully at the shelf tag, right on the corner or side of the price tag where it tells the cost per ounce. For .59 cents more, you can get a 2 lb bag of rice which will last far longer than that 8oz box of instant crap. You’re welcome.

Preparedness: The MSO Minuteman Protocol

A Minuteman is someone who is prepared – at a moment’s notice – to respond to whatever situation they may be confronted with. It may be a simple power outage. It may be suddenly finding yourself near a mass shooting in a mall. It could be walking into a situation

where your neighbors are getting assaulted by some drug addicts. It may be a breakdown of society and you find yourself and family in a world without rule of law.

Regardless—you need to be ready. You need to be a Minuteman.

Summary: What follows is a suggested “system” or template which one could follow and adapt to their particular needs and circumstances. A variety of minimum equipment/supply levels are listed.

People who read this document will live in many different states, have different economic capabilities, geographical conditions, and have a variety of environmental challenges which to deal with. This means that no single, individual system recommendation will work for all.

MSO Minutemen are made up of men and women from all religions, races, and nationalities. We all want to work, provide for our families, and live our existence on our terms. We believe in what the Founding Fathers of this country created many years ago. We believe in the Constitution.

We also believe that we all have a responsibility to provide and care for our communities and prepare for concerning times ahead. This preparation towards readiness combines food storage, water, defensive equipment, and gear which can be used in case of a power outage or a major supply chain interruption – or worse.

This country’s economic welfare, morality, and socioeconomic state are in a free fall towards a destructive demise. I hope what follows provides some guidance and provokes thought on how to be ready….”just in case”.

LEVEL I – Basics

This is not an all-knowing, endless list of all supplies that any Minuteman could ever need. Rather, it is just template which to follow and provide ideas. Customize your own individual system to fit your needs and situation.

SUPPLIES

soupFood – Most any serious emergency will disrupt the normal distribution of food. It is critically important to maintain enough food reserves to make it through until things return to normal. How long will that be? That is the $100,000 dollar question. We recommend for Level I to have at least a one month reserve of food.

A one month food storage supply for one person can be put together with commonly found food from at any grocery store. The saying – “Store what you eat and eat what you store.” holds true. What follows is an example of a One Month Food Supply for one person:

20 cans             soups

15 cans             beef stew

30 cans             vegetables

15 cans             fruit

2 lrg boxes        Pancake mix (add-water-only)

2 bottles            Syrup

2 boxes             saltine crackers/whole wheat crackers

2 jars                peanut butter

15 boxes           pasta/spaghetti

15 jars              spaghetti sauce

15 cans             baked beans

20 cans             meat/Spam

15 bars             candy bars/nutrition bars

This is not a perfect diet by any means; however it does provide plenty of calories and variety for one person for at least 30 days. In addition to the food items – plan on alternative methods for cooking and preparing food should the power go out.

waterWater – There is a commonly used adage that in an emergency the minimum water requirements are one gallon per person per day. This is the minimum depending upon activity and likely is not enough. For the MSO Minuteman, store as much water as you can – with Level I recommending at least 30+ gallons for each person.

What follows is an example of a One Month Water Supply for one person:

12 jugs, gal.      Spring water from local grocery store

3 cases             Bottled drinking water, cases of 24 bottles

3 jugs               7-gallon Blue containers, available at Wal-Mart/Amazon.com

Beyond water storage – the ability to filter water should be prepared for and considered. A common Brita-brand water filter is excellent for filtering out small foreign particles – however they will not work for water that may have pathogens or bacteria. With this in mind – it is recommended that a LifeStraw Water Filtration Straw be stored for each person.

fakitMedicalThe category “Medical” covers both first aid as well as other medical considerations. A good basic First Aid Kit is a requirement, along with some other first aid supplies. Should you have health issues requiring prescriptions or other necessary items – those should be stocked to have at least a one month supply.

Suggested Level I Supply List:

target2Defense – Firearms are a critical part of any Minuteman’s system. In fact – many would argue that it is THE most important part. In a serious SHTF or WROL (Without Rule of Law) event  – law abiding citizens will be preyed upon by criminals and thugs. It is up to the Minuteman to defend themselves, their families, and their neighbors.

The Minuteman is to be at the ready at all times to respond. With this said – they must be able to grab their firearms, their gear – and react.

Here is the recommended minimal equipment for Level I:

  • Rifle – any long gun that can be shot reliably and accurately
  • Ammunition – minimum 250 rounds of ammunition
  • Carrying System – system to carry ammunition, firearm(s), magazines, etc.
  • Gun Cleaning Kit

Method for carrying defensive supplies:

In order to achieve the “grab-and-go” concept there must be a system in place by which to transport needed defensive equipment efficiently. Whether a Winchester 94 lever-action .30-30 is your rifle of choice or an AR-15 – extra ammunition and other defensive supplies need to be at the ready at all times. Generally – this is achieved through a variety of pouches, packs, bags and vests.

For the Level I Minuteman – develop a system for carrying extra ammunition and magazines that fits your budget and is comfortable to use. Once decided on – practice with that system over and over again.

One possible solution for carry a defense load is the tactical load bearing vest. One inexpensive example is the Condor Modular Chest Rig running under $40.00 at time of publishing.

Another possible “grab-and-go” carry option for defensive gear is the 5.11 Bail Out Bag. Basically, the 5.11 is a shoulder bag with multiple compartments including magazine pockets in the outside for AR magazines.

Bottom Line: A system must be developed so that in about a “minute” your main battle weapon and needed supplies can be grabbed and you can go to where you need to be.

SKILLS – Skills are the most underrated and under-discussed aspects of preparedness. To be part of the MSOnline Minutemen System – certain skills are necessary.

Here is the recommended minimal skills for Level I:

  • Basic First Aid Skills – take a basic first aid course or at a minimum self-study reading and watching video’s. Be able to:
    • Treat cuts, scrapes, and abrasions
    • Know the steps to stop bleeding
    • Identify hyperthermia, heat stroke/exhaustion – and how to treat
    • Apply a splint
    • Identify and treat shock
  • Breakdown carried firearms, clean, and reassemble

plansPLANS & INFORMATION – What happens if power is lost through an area and there is no method for communication with loved ones? Does everyone know what to do? This is the premise of this section – making plans “just in case”.

Here are the suggested plans to make for Level I:

  • Power Outage – everyone in the household needs to know what to do if there is a power outage. Don’t open the fridge, know where flashlights are, stay warm in winter time, radio for news, etc.
  • Significant Event/Danger – What will each member of the family do in the event of a significant event such as a terrorist attack? Communications may be down and family and friends may be away from home. Who will get the kids from school? How will everyone get home from work? What if?…….
  • Simple Vehicle Breakdown – car breaks down on the way home from work – then what? What if someone can’t be reached via cell phone? Are there numbers for local tow trucks in the glove box? How about an AAA membership?

Everyone’s potential problems and solutions will be different. Think of what plans and procedures need to be made as part of your Minuteman Protocol System.

MISC GEAR CHECKLIST – here is a basic list of general supplies that should be stored and readily available in case of an emergency.

Recommended Books – here are a few recommended books related to defense and preparedness and would fit well in any Minuteman’s library.

Summary – This completes the template for the ModernSurvivalOnline: The Minuteman Protocol – Level I. This is considered a minimal template for preparedness.

Remember – the Minuteman Protocol is to be at the ready, so in a moments notice you will be ready to defend your family, your loved ones, your property and supplies…..and your country. Mexico: Bird Flu Outbreak Hits 582,000 Chickens

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s animal health agency says a bird flu outbreak at seven farms in central Mexico has affected as many as 582,000 chickens.

The Agriculture Department says more than a half million birds were exposed, but the number that will have to be slaughtered has yet to be determined.

An outbreak of the H7N3 bird flu virus in western Mexico in 2012 led to the slaughter of more than 22 million hens and caused price increases in chicken and egg products.

But the department said Friday that the current outbreak has not affected the supply of chicken products.

It said tests were continuing to determine the exact strain of virus involved in the outbreak, but said it did not affect humans.

Mexico’s nationwide flock amounts to 137 million birds.

The government’s never going to tell you that it’s going to happen.

“Greece’s Yunker said recently, ‘When is becomes serious—you have to lie’. These guys are never going to tell you the truth, because they can’t tell you the truth. Their job is to promote confidence, not to tell you the truth.”

We recently had dinner with the deputy governor of the bank of japan, he just finished a speech denouncing money printing, or quantitative easing. We said ‘Wait a minute, when you expand your balance sheet to buy bonds, we call that money printing, what do you call it?’ He conferred with his advisers, came back and said, ‘When the market tells us it’s money printing, it’ll be money printing. When the rates go up and not down when we buy bonds, THEN it’s monetizing the deficit.”

“We just look at Gold as another currency that you can’t print…Limitless credit creation is probably a bad idea.”

Very revealing indeed. To see these comments coming from one of the world’s leading hedge fund managers is quiet an eye-opener. Thoughts?

Cooking Skills: Tamale Making Tips and Techniques

Homemade tamales are the best. If you have not made them in your own kitchen, here are a few tips and tricks.

The taste of tamales made at home is almost beyond description. It’s quite a process, however, and should be planned over a two-day period. The second day will be a long one. Tamale – or tamal – cooking will go much easier if you can round up two or more friends or family members to pitch in.

Since making tamales is a bit tedious, it’s best to go ahead and make a bunch. They freeze and reheat well and you’ll always have some handy for readymade meals.

About the corn husks

If you can’t find corn husks, or hojas, locally, purchase them online. Basically, it’s not worth the trouble without corn husks. It is their flavor that adds so much to a true tamale.

Second, you can save quite a bit of money if you have access to a local, small, Mexican market. Buying husks by the pound instead of pre-packaged in larger stores is much cheaper.

There are tradeoffs with husks by the pound and from small markets. They may have a few bugs and you’ll certainly find bug holes. Remember, these are corn products and it is no different than finding a bug in a bag of flour or similar product. It is best to freeze the husks for at least 24 hours and that will eliminate any living creatures. Let the husks come to room temperature.

You may also find a few husks with traces of old mold in some spots. Toss the worst of them; the majority of these husks should be fine for use.

A pound of hojas equals about 110 corn husks. You will get approximately 86 usable husks out of this batch. That excludes the husks you will need to tear into strips for tying the bundles (if you choose to use that method).

If you do use the tie-down method, save back some of the longer husks. The longer the string, the easier it is to use as a tie.

Soak the husks for a couple of hours. You should use a large pot as you will need the sink for other preparation.

Rinse really well and remove any silk – there shouldn’t be many strings. Even after a thorough rinsing, don’t be surprised if the husks still feel lightly gritty. Lay out on paper towels. You can stack the paper towels/corn husks in several layers.

The meat

It’s better to have too much meat than too little. Any leftover meat can be re-frozen or used in enchiladas or any number of other recipes. We had nearly a double batch with: 7 pounds pork shoulder butt, 2 three-pound hens, and 5 pounds of legs and thighs. We used a heaping tablespoon of meat for each tamale. If the corn husk was large, we used more masa mixture and more meat.

Remove as much fat and skin as possible after the pork and poultry has been simmered. Do not allow to boil for any length of time as that breaks down the proteins. Use a meat thermometer to determine when the pork and poultry are done (approx. 160/180 respectively).

Use latex gloves and the de-fatting/shredding process will be much less messy.

When shredding, use a fork with the tines facing “up.” In other words, press the fork face up into the edges of the meat and you should get a good shred. Plowing into the meat with the fork upside down is not as effective.

The process

You’ll need about 3 pounds of masa flour for 1 pound of husks. That’s about 3 tablespoons of dough per husk, give or take. Keep spare masa on hand in case you need to make a quick batch.

You will use quite a bit of broth to bring the dough up to peanut butter texture. We found that the broth from the pork and the whole chickens was easier to skim. While our broth from the legs and thighs (cooked separately) look really good just off the heat, when it was refrigerated it gelled. The other two types of broth were easy to skim after overnight refrigeration.

For the broth, you will need approximately 2 quarts. Mix one quart chicken broth and one quart pork broth together in a large bowl and warm in the microwave. Then pour into the masa a cup at a time as you mix.

You’ll want to mix up the dough with bare hands. It will be like playing in thick mud and you need to sort out all the balled-up bits of masa flour. That’s why it’s best to have a second pair of hands that can pour the broth as you squeeze and mix.

Make sure you have plenty of steamer space ahead of time. The recipes I found for tamales stated from 1-2 hours. Our tamales usually take about 3 ½-4 hours for steaming. You won’t have time to do several batches.

One large turkey fryer with a deep steamer basket should hold the tamales (bundle-style, not open-ended). Just place corn husks in between the layers. A super-sized turkey roaster with warming trays will hold about 46 tamales.

Add as much or as little salt as you wish. The same for chili powder. It will not affect the process of cooking tamales and you can adjust these to your own tastes. The same goes for garlic powder.

We use the double-string method of tying bundles. They look pretty and hold up well when stacking in a steamer. Bring the two sides together and fold them over together as tightly as you can. Bring one end up over the fold and tie it; the repeat by folding the opposite end and tying around the tamale. Takes a little longer and other methods.

As with any recipe, you’ll find so many variations on the recipe. Apply these techniques and you will be the most popular tamale-maker in the neighborhood!

Supplement Your Canned Food Storage With Vitamins

Check nutrition labels and you will find that most canned fruits and vegetables contain very little in the way of vitamins. Having said that, there are some that are enriched with additional vitamins and are good sources of nutrition. Know this though… as time passes, the vitamin content drops. The ‘best if used by’ date printed on the packaging typically indicates the time when the vitamin content on the label is accurate.

While the nutritional value decreases over time, the caloric value of canned foods will last well beyond the ‘best if used by’ date. Unless cans are dented, rusted, or bulging, the food may still be good for its caloric content, but not so much the nutrient content. Not only that, but many other food storage items may not provide an adequate supply of nutrients.

Mental and physical health is affected by vitamin intake. For example, B vitamin deficiencies are being looked at as contributing factors in depression. Vitamin D, known for being the sole cause of rickets in children, also is suspected to have a role in depression and osteoporosis.

Vitamin supplements are a must and should be stored in a cool, dry place. Like other food storage items, vitamins also, should be rotated frequently. A good multivitamin, along with additional vitamin C, Calcium, and Vitamin D, is especially critical for adults and children. As a side note, Vitamin C in the crystalline form, lasts indefinitely.

Remember, all of the top survival equipment and food storage in the world will do little good if we do not have the physical and mental capacity for their proper use. You must remain healthy. Supplementing your food storage with stored vitamin supplements may pay off bigger than you may think.

By the way, although the title refers to canned food storage, we highly recommend a diversified food storage plan including canned, dehydrated, freeze-dried, fresh, as well as a broad variety of food types. Don’t forget to use them in your daily meal planning… and ROTATE.

Alaska to Stockpile Mass Amounts of Food and Supplies…

With its remote location and dependence on the uninterrupted flow of supplies from the lower 48 states, the Governor of Alaska has made disaster readiness a hallmark of his administration.

Gov. Sean Parnell worries a major earthquake or volcanic eruption could leave the state’s 720,000 residents stranded and cut off from food and supply lines. His answer: Build giant warehouses full of emergency food and supplies, just in case.

For some in the lower 48, it may seem like an extreme step. But Parnell says this is just Alaska.

“We have a different motivation to do this, because help is a long ways away,” said John Madden, Alaska’s emergency management director.

The state plans two food stockpiles in or near Fairbanks and Anchorage, two cities that also have military bases. Construction on the two storage facilities will begin this fall, and the first food deliveries are targeted for December. The goal is to have enough food to feed 40,000 people for up to a week, including three days of ready-to-eat meals and four days of bulk food that can be prepared and cooked for large groups. To put that number into perspective, Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, has about 295,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and Juneau, its third largest, about 31,000.

It’s not unusual for states that routinely experience hurricanes or other large-scale disasters to have supplies like water, ready-to-eat meals, cots and blankets. But Alaska is interested in stocking food with at least a five-year shelf life that meets the nutrition, health and cultural requirements of the state’s unique demographics.

An estimated 90 percent of commodities entering Alaska are delivered through the Port of Anchorage. Air service is also a critical link to the outside world and generally the only way to reach many rural communities. A volcanic blast emitting a large amount of smoke and ash could disrupt supply lines by air and water for an extended period, Madden said, and an earthquake could knock out airport runways or ports. Those are just some of the disasters that might require emergency supplies.

State officials have been working to encourage individual responsibility, with talks at schools and public gatherings. Emergency management officials plan to have a booth at the Alaska State Fair. A statewide disaster drill is planned for October.

Over the past year, the state has acquired or purchased water purification units and generators designed to work in cold climates, including units that could power facilities like hospitals, Madden said. Officials also are determining what the state needs in terms of emergency medical supplies and shelter, he said.

Alaska’s Governor understands the fragility of modern just-in-time supply lines, and rather than leaving his state completely unprepared for a disaster as Louisiana did in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he is taking steps to have at least the bare necessities on hand in the event of a worst-case scenario.

Of note is that the State will only be stockpiling about five days worth of food and critical supplies for its population. Definitely a good start, but certainly not enough for any prolonged disaster that may strike their ports or the Continental United States. That’s why they are urging individuals to take it upon themselves to prepare as well.

As we have seen with every major disaster in the world over the last century, when an emergency strikes the government will be overwhelmed. Help will not be on the way – police, medical personnel and local government could potentially disappear in a serious emergency as first responders would go home to be with their families, or simply be out of contact due to downed communication lines.

Like Alaska, every American should prepare for the absence of government assistance and create a well rounded preparedness plan to deal with the aftermath of a disaster, whether natural or man-made.
