Military History: Guerrila Warfare Tactics

Guerrilla Warfare Tactics

From PrepperIdeas.com | On Saturday, January 5th, 2013

“In military language, tactics are the practical methods of achieving the grand strategic objectives. In one sense they complement strategy and in another they are more specific rules within it. As means, tactics are much more variable, much more flexible than the final objectives, and they should be adjusted continually during the struggle. There are tactical objectives that remain constant throughout a war and others that vary. The first thing to be considered is the adjusting of guerrilla action to the action of the enemy…”

Preppers will die in WROL

“Preppers are going to die… unless they wake up.

In this video, I pull no punches because I care enough about you to tell you just how it is. I realize I may lose some subscribers but that’s not what it’s about to me, it’s about doing the right thing, about living my values and about trying to help. I can’t help unless I speak up about something that is really out of line here in the community.

If I’m wrong, tell me where. If I’m right, you have a choice to make. I hope this 4th of July is a turning point for so many of you.”

Mental Illness After The Collapse

Dealing With Mentally Unbalanced Trespassers – Survival Blog

“The biggest weakness in preparedness planning is not a forgotten survival item, or too few cartridges. The invisible weakness is lack of real time experience. It’s one thing to say your going to raise your own food, and maybe you have all the seeds and tools to do it stored away. But if you have never actually planted a huge garden and tried to live off it your first year is going to be full of failures (see: learning opportunities) that could be potentially deadly in real survival time. The same goes for every aspect of survival and emergency situation response. Personally I have always wondered how I would react in a real SHTF situation. Would I freeze? React too slowly? Freak out?…”

Preparedness: The MSO Minuteman Protocol

By Rourke | From ModernSurvivalOnline.com | On Monday, Marc h 11th, 2013

msomen

A Minuteman is someone who is prepared – at a moment’s notice – to respond to whatever situation they may be confronted with. It may be a simple power outage. It may be suddenly finding yourself near a mass shooting in a mall. It could be walking into a situation

where your neighbors are getting assaulted by some drug addicts. It may be a breakdown of society and you find yourself and family in a world without rule of law.

Regardless—you need to be ready. You need to be a Minuteman.

Summary: What follows is a suggested “system” or template which one could follow and adapt to their particular needs and circumstances. A variety of minimum equipment/supply levels are listed.

People who read this document will live in many different states, have different economic capabilities, geographical conditions, and have a variety of environmental challenges which to deal with. This means that no single, individual system recommendation will work for all.

MSO Minutemen are made up of men and women from all religions, races, and nationalities. We all want to work, provide for our families, and live our existence on our terms. We believe in what the Founding Fathers of this country created many years ago. We believe in the Constitution.

We also believe that we all have a responsibility to provide and care for our communities and prepare for concerning times ahead. This preparation towards readiness combines food storage, water, defensive equipment, and gear which can be used in case of a power outage or a major supply chain interruption – or worse.

****************************************************************

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

****************************************************************

Being a Minuteman does not mean that you are radical, anti-government, or unpatriotic. As a matter of fact as a Minuteman you should back the US Constitution 100%, and this Republic called the United States of America. You should also support peaceful, democratic methods which to guide and create positive change for America.

This country’s economic welfare, morality, and socioeconomic state are in a free fall towards a destructive demise. I hope what follows provides some guidance and provokes thought on how to be ready….”just in case”.

LEVEL I – Basics

This is not an all-knowing, endless list of all supplies that any Minuteman could ever need. Rather, it is just template which to follow and provide ideas. Customize your own individual system to fit your needs and situation.

SUPPLIES

soupFood – Most any serious emergency will disrupt the normal distribution of food. It is critically important to maintain enough food reserves to make it through until things return to normal. How long will that be? That is the $100,000 dollar question. We recommend for Level I to have at least a one month reserve of food.

A one month food storage supply for one person can be put together with commonly found food from at any grocery store. The saying – “Store what you eat and eat what you store.” holds true. What follows is an example of a One Month Food Supply for one person:

20 cans             soups

15 cans             beef stew

30 cans             vegetables

15 cans             fruit

2 lrg boxes        Pancake mix (add-water-only)

2 bottles            Syrup

2 boxes             saltine crackers/whole wheat crackers

2 jars                peanut butter

15 boxes           pasta/spaghetti

15 jars              spaghetti sauce

15 cans             baked beans

20 cans             meat/Spam

15 bars             candy bars/nutrition bars

This is not a perfect diet by any means; however it does provide plenty of calories and variety for one person for at least 30 days. In addition to the food items – plan on alternative methods for cooking and preparing food should the power go out.

waterWater – There is a commonly used adage that in an emergency the minimum water requirements are one gallon per person per day. This is the minimum depending upon activity and likely is not enough. For the MSO Minuteman, store as much water as you can – with Level I recommending at least 30+ gallons for each person.

What follows is an example of a One Month Water Supply for one person:

12 jugs, gal.      Spring water from local grocery store

3 cases             Bottled drinking water, cases of 24 bottles

3 jugs               7-gallon Blue containers, available at Wal-Mart/Amazon.com

Beyond water storage – the ability to filter water should be prepared for and considered. A common Brita-brand water filter is excellent for filtering out small foreign particles – however they will not work for water that may have pathogens or bacteria. With this in mind – it is recommended that a LifeStraw Water Filtration Straw be stored for each person.

fakitMedicalThe category “Medical” covers both first aid as well as other medical considerations. A good basic First Aid Kit is a requirement, along with some other first aid supplies. Should you have health issues requiring prescriptions or other necessary items – those should be stocked to have at least a one month supply.

Suggested Level I Supply List:

target2Defense – Firearms are a critical part of any Minuteman’s system. In fact – many would argue that it is THE most important part. In a serious SHTF or WROL (Without Rule of Law) event  – law abiding citizens will be preyed upon by criminals and thugs. It is up to the Minuteman to defend themselves, their families, and their neighbors.

ar15

The Minuteman is to be at the ready at all times to respond. With this said – they must be able to grab their firearms, their gear – and react.

Here is the recommended minimal equipment for Level I:

  • Rifle – any long gun that can be shot reliably and accurately
  • Ammunition – minimum 250 rounds of ammunition
  • Carrying System – system to carry ammunition, firearm(s), magazines, etc.
  • Gun Cleaning Kit

Method for carrying defensive supplies:

In order to achieve the “grab-and-go” concept there must be a system in place by which to transport needed defensive equipment efficiently. Whether a Winchester 94 lever-action .30-30 is your rifle of choice or an AR-15 – extra ammunition and other defensive supplies need to be at the ready at all times. Generally – this is achieved through a variety of pouches, packs, bags and vests.

condorvest2

For the Level I Minuteman – develop a system for carrying extra ammunition and magazines that fits your budget and is comfortable to use. Once decided on – practice with that system over and over again.

One possible solution for carry a defense load is the tactical load bearing vest. One inexpensive example is the Condor Modular Chest Rig running under $40.00 at time of publishing.

Another possible “grab-and-go” carry option for defensive gear is the 5.11 Bail Out Bag. Basically, the 5.11 is a shoulder bag with multiple compartments including magazine pockets in the outside for AR magazines.

Bottom Line: A system must be developed so that in about a “minute” your main battle weapon and needed supplies can be grabbed and you can go to where you need to be.

SKILLS – Skills are the most underrated and under-discussed aspects of preparedness. To be part of the MSOnline Minutemen System – certain skills are necessary.

Here is the recommended minimal skills for Level I:

  • Basic First Aid Skills – take a basic first aid course or at a minimum self-study reading and watching video’s. Be able to:
    • Treat cuts, scrapes, and abrasions
    • Know the steps to stop bleeding
    • Identify hyperthermia, heat stroke/exhaustion – and how to treat
    • Apply a splint
    • Identify and treat shock
  • Breakdown carried firearms, clean, and reassemble

plansPLANS & INFORMATION – What happens if power is lost through an area and there is no method for communication with loved ones? Does everyone know what to do? This is the premise of this section – making plans “just in case”.

Here are the suggested plans to make for Level I:

  • Power Outage – everyone in the household needs to know what to do if there is a power outage. Don’t open the fridge, know where flashlights are, stay warm in winter time, radio for news, etc.
  • Significant Event/Danger – What will each member of the family do in the event of a significant event such as a terrorist attack? Communications may be down and family and friends may be away from home. Who will get the kids from school? How will everyone get home from work? What if?…….
  • Simple Vehicle Breakdown – car breaks down on the way home from work – then what? What if someone can’t be reached via cell phone? Are there numbers for local tow trucks in the glove box? How about an AAA membership?

Everyone’s potential problems and solutions will be different. Think of what plans and procedures need to be made as part of your Minuteman Protocol System.

MISC GEAR CHECKLIST – here is a basic list of general supplies that should be stored and readily available in case of an emergency.

Recommended Books – here are a few recommended books related to defense and preparedness and would fit well in any Minuteman’s library.

Summary – This completes the template for the ModernSurvivalOnline: The Minuteman Protocol – Level I. This is considered a minimal template for preparedness.

Remember – the Minuteman Protocol is to be at the ready, so in a moments notice you will be ready to defend your family, your loved ones, your property and supplies…..and your country. The MSO Minuteman is honest, has integrity – and is proud to do the right things. The Minuteman holds close those values which built this great country over 200 years ago.

This Level I Template is available for download HERE.  Please feel free to download and share.

Cuomo: Seizing New Yorkers’ Guns Is An Option

By Thomas Kaplan | From NYTimes.com | On Thursday, December 20th, 2012

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Thursday that he had started discussions with leaders of the State Legislature about new gun control measures, and that he planned to propose a package of gun legislation in his State of the State address on Jan. 9.

“There’s a big difference of opinion on these issues,” Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, said in an interview on an Albany radio station.

The New York Assembly, controlled by Democrats, has voted for a number of proposed gun control measures in recent years, only to have the legislation falter in the Senate, which has been controlled by Republicans. (Starting next month, the Senate is to be led by a coalition of Republicans and a breakaway faction of Democrats.)

Mr. Cuomo, speaking on WGDJ-AM, said gun control had not recently been among the most discussed topics in the capital, so he had reached out to lawmakers to gauge where they stood before he made his proposals final.

He added that he was focusing his attention on changing state laws restricting the possession of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. The governor described the state’s existing ban on those items as having “more holes than Swiss cheese.”

“I don’t think legitimate sportsmen are going to say, ‘I need an assault weapon to go hunting,’ ” he said. At the same time, he noted that he owns a shotgun that he has used for hunting, and said, “There is a balance here — I understand the rights of gun owners; I understand the rights of hunters.”

In the interview, Mr. Cuomo did not offer specifics about the measures he might propose, but, while discussing assault weapons, he said: “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

Mr. Cuomo said it was highly unlikely that lawmakers would reach a deal on new gun laws in the coming days, dismissing as unfounded suggestions that legislators would be called back to Albany as early as this week for a special session devoted to the subject of gun control.

“The only thing that’s going to happen in the next few days is Christmas,” Mr. Cuomo said.

This article was originally posted at http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/21/nyregion/cuomo-says-he-will-outline-gun-measures-next-month.html

Here’s a fun fact: The Second Amendment was not established to protect hunters’ rights to own hunting rifles and shotguns… it was created to allow for the self-protection of the American people from the grips of a tyrannical government.

Flash Mobs – How to Protect Yourself From Being Caught in the Mayhem

From OffGridSurvival.com

Flash Mob

Technology is changing the way we live, unfortunately it’s also making it easier and faster for criminals to communicate, plan and execute their crimes. With the advent of texting and social media it’s never been easier for large groups of criminals to come together and wreak havoc in a matter of minutes. This makes it incredibly difficult for the average person to prevent being caught up in a bad situation.

The latest criminal threat is something that’s been dubbed “Flash Mobs”. Flash Mobs actually started as a pretty innocent online trend where people would use social media to spontaneously gather large groups of people in a set location. I suspect that a lot of these early flash mobs were driven by marketing companies as a way to promote their clients products and services.

Fast forward a couple years, and this once innocent online trend has grown into something more insidious. Over the last couple of years these Flash Mobs have morphed into something that can quickly go out of control and become a serious danger to the public

Criminal Flash Mobs

The Flash Mob trend is now being used by gangs of criminals to quickly overrun a business in order to steal, loot and even intimidate business owners into complying with the gangs demands. But it’s not just business owners who are in danger. In fact, these same tactics are now being used to assault innocent people on the streets, rob victims inside these stores and even steal peoples cars at major intersections throughout the country.

These Flash Mobs are becoming increasingly unpredictable, more violent and in some areas are becoming an everyday occurrence.

How Quick and Out of Control these Mobs can Become

In the video below, taken by a shopper at a Jacksonville, Florida Walmart, somewhere around 300 out-of-control teens stormed the store after a party. The Mob rushed through the store knocking people over, stealing large amounts of merchandise and vandalizing everything in sight.

In this video an innocent man is violently attacked on the streets of Philadelphia by a Flash Mob.

In this video out of Detroit, security cameras caught a group of criminals storm a gas station and then the violently beat the clerk. Residents say that this type of activity has become an almost daily occurrence that has been largely ignored by local law enforcement.

So What can be Done to Protect Yourself from Flash Mobs?

Stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Flash Mobs can literally overtake an area in a matter of seconds. If you get the slightest premonition that something may be wrong you need to listen to your instincts.

Keep an eye on the crowd. If you notice an abnormal increase in the number of people in your area, this could be the first sign that something isn’t right. Immediately scan the area and try to get a feel for the types of people that are walking around. By in large, most of these Flash Mob style crimes are conducted by teenagers. If you’re in a store that seems to all of a sudden fill up with teenagers, it’s probably a good time to make your exit.

Beat them at their own game. The last thing I want to mention is using the same technology that these criminals use to your advantage.  Although these Flash Mobs can often seem to spring up out of nowhere, they are often heavily promoted or talked about on sites like Twitter and Facebook. If you plan on going to a mall, or somewhere that may be targeted by these groups, jump on Twitter and type in the name of your destination. It only takes a couple seconds of your time, but those couple of seconds can warn you to any impending dangers.

So what happens if you find yourself in the middle of a full blown riot?

The first thing you want to do is quickly access the situation. Whenever I go into a building, the first thing I do is quickly scan the area. I make sure that I have a pretty good sense of where the exits are, or where I would go if all hell breaks loose.

If you failed to look for the buildings exits upon arrival, quickly scan the area to see if you can make a quick getaway. If you’re near an exit get out as fast as possible.

You don’t see an Exit, now what?

If you were not able to make a quick exit, the next thing you want to do is try to blend in. If that means momentarily blending into the crowd by pretending to cheer for the idiots make sure you do whatever it takes to seem like your one of them.

If everyone is shouting about something, then you should be doing the same thing. By blending into the chaos and not drawing attention to yourself, you will be less likely to become a target. But remember your number one job is to keep looking for the quickest possible escape route. As soon as you find it, get the hell out.

Go with the flow – This is something that I recommended in last year’s article, “surviving a riot.” Think of the mob as a large raging river. The best way to get out of a river is to swim with the current and slowly make your way to the edge. The same thing applies in this situation.

The last thing you want to do is to yell, scream, cut through the crowd, or draw any unwanted attention onto yourself. Stay Calm, go with the flow, and work your way to the edge. Then quietly slip away to safety.

Surviving an Active Shooter Situation

From OffGridSurvival.com

While active shooter situations are still pretty rare, it’s a phenomenon that does seem to be increasing in regularity. From the recent shooting in Colorado, to terrorist attacks around the globe, these events do happen and they are something that we need to be prepared to respond to.

Preparing for Active Shooter Situations and Terrorist Attacks

situational awarenessSituational Awareness

Being able to protect yourself in an active shooter situation begins with having a good sense of what’s going on around you. As I suggested in a previous article, about protecting yourself during a flash mob situation, knowing your environment is one of the most important safety precautions that you can take in any situation.

Before entering any public place, you want to scope out the situation. If anything looks out of place, or your gut tells you something isn’t right; Listen to your instincts and leave.

Find your Exit Points

Part of being aware of your environment, means knowing how to get out when things go bad. Upon entering any new area, the first thing you want to do is look for every possible escape route and exit. This one thing could mean the difference between life and death, and isn’t something that should never be overlooked.

Always Give Yourself the Tactical Advantage

Call it paranoia, I call it always being prepared. When putting yourself in a target rich environment -  like a movie theater, public gathering or concert venue -  there are a couple of things you should do to maximize your ability to survive a deadly situation.

First, try to avoid situations that may turn violent.  While predicting one of these events is almost impossible, there are a number of things you can do that will put the odds in your favor.

AVOID HIGH PROFILE EVENTS

large crowdsThe madmen who commit these crimes are looking for attention. Lone shooters and terrorist organizations are both looking for media attention and high body counts. They are more likely to attack people during high profile events, so when possible:

  • Avoid opening night events
  • Avoid sold out shows and concerts
  • Avoid high profile events and politically charged rallies

DON’T BECOME AN EASY TARGET

If you do go to a large event such as a movie, a concert, or some sort of rally or sporting event; choose seats that are situated near an exit. The last place you want to be during a shooting is stuck in the middle of a crowd or in the middle of row of seats.  Placement is a hugely important factor in staying safe.

  • Choose seats near exits
  • Never choose seats in the middle of a crowd
  • Don’t make yourself stand out from the crowd in any way
  • Make sure there are no obstacles standing in your way of making a quick escape

TRUST YOUR GUT!

We have instincts for a reason. A number of people in the recent Colorado event had a bad feeling when they saw the shooter enter the building. Yet most of them brushed off their feelings and reasoned that it was probably some sort of publicity stunt for the movie.  Even after the shooting started, a number of people said “they still thought it had to be part of the show.”

If a situation seems odd, if something seems out of place, or your gut tells you something isn’t right; listen to your instincts and don’t wait around to find out what happened.

Surviving an Active Shooter Situation

Should the unthinkable happen, and you find yourself in the middle of an active shooter situation, there are a couple of things that you can do to help maximize your chances of survival.

targetESCAPE – YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

In my opinion, this is first and foremost on the list of options.  In an active shooter situation, the first thing you want to do is try to escape. This isn’t a movie or a video game, when the bullets start flying the last place you want to be is anywhere near the shooter.

Hopefully you took the time upon entering your location to scope out the exits. If you can safely make your way to an exit, do so without hesitation and without attracting unwanted attention from the shooter. Once you hit the exit, keep going. Distance is one of the keys to surviving the situation.

BARRICADE  – TAKING COVER

Taking cover means moving yourself away from any possible harm. If you can’t safely remove yourself from the situation; the next best option may be to take cover. When I say take cover, I don’t mean closing your eyes and hiding behind some tiny little object.

In the movies, you often see the hero of the story returning fire from behind some ridiculous object like a table or piece of furniture. In real life, these objects provide little if any actual protection from incoming fire. There’s a big difference between taking cover behind a solid barrier (like a concrete wall) and hiding behind a chair or table.

ATTACK

Critics of this option will probably argue that you should never try to attack a shooter. But if you’re in a situation where there’s no place to run and no place to seek cover; what other option do you have? Most critics fall silent when asked that question.

The fact is in an active shooter situation, you often have very few options. Lying frozen in fear does nothing to add to your chances of coming out alive. If you have no other options, you need to act quickly and decisively to try to take out the shooter.

If you have a weapon, then hopefully you have trained for this type of situation. I’m not going to go into tactics and proper response, because nothing I can write will properly prepare you for this situation. Only proper training, both physically and mentally, can help you prepare for this type of encounter. Please don’t underestimate the need to properly train yourself in the ways of self defense.

After the attack, get to safety.

Once you have exited the building, or removed yourself from the situation, DO NOT DROP YOUR GUARD. What if the shooter returns? What if there are other shooters waiting outside the exits?

I was stunned to see cell phone footage of people fleeing the scene of last week’s shooting. Why anyone would stay and film this tragedy is not only disgusting, it’s something  that could get you killed.  Hanging out at the scene of the incident is never a good idea, trying to film it on your cell phone is just plain stupid.

While these types of incidents are extremely rare, they do happen and they are something that we must be prepared to respond to. We live in a sick society that is constantly seeking fame and unfortunately there are a growing number of lunatics who will do anything it takes to receive that fame and notoriety. This is a problem that will probably only get worse with time.
